CAMPOBELLO, SC (WSPA) – Campobello Police Department officials said a man was arrested after a domestic incident led to a chase and crashing his vehicle into the Green River.
According to Campobello Police Chief Chad McNeill, Polk County deputies made a traffic stop on a vehicle near Coleman Street in Campobello just before 1 p.m., after it had been traveling on Highway 76 and went through Campobello Square before stopping near Coleman Street.
Deputies were making a stop in reference to a domestic call about a woman being held against her will.
When the car stopped, the woman jumped out of the vehicle. She was not injured.
Officers learned that the driver, a man, had three or four felony warrant in North Carolina.
According to McNeill, when the man heard them say the word “warrants,” he sped off in the vehicle again.
Law enforcement chased him onto Highway 9, where he then crashed into the Green River.
McNeill said the man got out of the car and swam a mile down the river, but was later arrested.
According to McNeill, the driver had taken in water and had cut his leg, and was taken to a hospital.
