Man charged in 2017 shooting death of Uber driver in Greenville Co.

GREENVILLE Co., SC (WSPA) – Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said a 26-year-old man has been charged in connection with the murder of an Uber driver.

Mike Mecklenburg was driving for Uber in April 2017 when he was shot to death.

The sheriff’s office said in a news release that investigators believe the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Joseph Jovanti Johnson III, shot Mecklenburg in the head after Meckenburg dropped off a passenger on Power Street.

Johnson lived on the street. Deputies say Johnson “engaged Mecklenburg in an unprovoked verbal altercation that eventually resulted in Johnson firing a single shot, striking Mecklenburg in the head.”

Last month, a news agency’s segment on the shooting death led to a tip implicating Johnson’s involvement.

Johnson was arrested Tuesday and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

He remains in the Greenville County Detention Center without bond.
