Man dies in hospital after shooting in Walhalla, ruled self-defense

WALHALLA, S.C. (WSPA) – There will be no criminal charges after a man injured in a shooting Tuesday morning in Walhalla died early Wednesday morning.

We reported earlier that Walhalla Police Department officers were called to a disturbance at the Country Ridge Apartments on Pine Manor Circle shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Police said two people were involved and a 31-year-old man was taken to Oconee Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital. The victim was in critical condition at the hospital as of 6:30 p.m., according to police.

On Wednesday, the coroner’s office said the man, Angel Rodriguez, Jr., died in the intensive care unit at the hospital at around 12:10 a.m.

Rodriguez’s death is being classified as a homicide.

Police and the solicitor’s office determined that the shooting was self-defense and there will be no charges brought against the shooter.
