Man, dog die in storage building fire in Pickens Co.

PICKENS Co., S.C. (WSPA) – Pickens County deputies are investigating a fatal fire on Dacusville Highway.

According to a sheriff’s office news release, a passing driver reported a fire in a storage building around 8:35 a.m. Wednesday in the 3100 block of Dacusville Highway.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and found the building destroyed.

Deputies confirmed that two adults — a man and woman — as well as a dog lived in the building.

The man, 61, and the dog died in the fire.

Deputies said the woman was taken to a nearby hospital with burns to her hands.

Detectives spoke with the woman who told them that she and her boyfriend lived in the building, and said the two of them saw a fire at or near a propane heater inside the structure.

According to the release, as they were trying to get out of the building, the man went back in to get some items and never came back out.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause and manner of his death.

The victim’s name has not been released at this time.

The sheriff’s office, along with SLED investigators will be examining and testing samples taken from the scene.

“Pickens County is not immune from the occasional tragedy involving the loss of life,” Sheriff Rick Clark said. “Our hearts and prayers remain with all of those involved or in some way connected to this incident to include our first responders.”
