TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY, NC (WSPA) – Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office deputies are searching for a theft suspect who may have evaded capture by jumping into a nearby river.

According to a sheriff’s office Facebook post, deputies were chasing Ryan Todd Bailey, a man wanted for larceny of a controlled substance, possession of a schedule III controlled substance and resist, obstruct, and delay.

“We believe the suspect may have gotten into the river to get away from our K-9 units; with the strong current at this time, he may have made his way out of the area,” according to the post.

Sheriff’s office officials said a rescue helicopter and several boats from local fire departments — Etowah Fire and Rescue and Little River Fire and Rescue — assisted in the search.

Officials said there is no reason to believe Bailey is armed and dangerous, but they urge everyone to use caution if you are in the area, or if you see him.

Bailey is described as having an average build, and was wearing dark-colored jeans and a maroon T-shirt. He has long, dark hair, which was possibly in a ponytail.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or the sheriff’s office at 828-884-3168.
