TRAVELERS REST, S.C. (WSPA) — Authorities are investigating after a man was found dead in a pickup truck along Highway 290 in Travelers Rest.

The coroner identified the man as Jamie Dale Smith, 31, of Easley.

Smith was found dead inside a truck on the side of the highway near Mush Creek Road.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a call of a truck in that area with its hazard lights on around 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

Deputies found a man with a gunshot wound in the driver’s seat.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy revealed that Smith died from a gunshot wound to the head and his death has been ruled a homicide.

Neighbors told 7News that Locust Hill Road was blocked off for hours Sunday as investigators gathered information. Some people in the area said they were shocked. Others said crime has gotten bad in the area, and they aren’t surprised.

“It’s a big concern to me that it happened this close to my house,” said Travelers Rest resident Judy Hart.

Hart said she’s lived on Locust Hill Road for about 20 years, and she said the road is usually pretty quiet, expect for the traffic.

“We have alot of business trucks going through, alot of 18 wheelers, and it’s a pretty busy road all the time,” Hart said.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office and the coroner’s office are investigating Smith’s death.
