Man gets life for murdering man and shooting woman in Chesnee

SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – Jason Andrew Cash, 25, of Inman has been sentence to life without parole for a shooting that killed and Chesnee man and seriously hurt a woman.

Cash was found guilty of:


Attempted murder

Armed robbery


First-degree burglary

The sentence includes a consecutive 30-year sentence on the attempted murder conviction.

The shooting happened on May 22, 2015 at a home on Highway 11 West near Chesnee, according to the report.

Carey Mauldin, 40, was found dead inside with multiple gunshot wounds to his head and torso.

Mauldin’s girlfriend, Casey Lee Scruggs, 30, of Inman, had been bound around the head, wrists and ankles with duct tape, according to the solicitor’s office.

They say Scruggs was shot in the head when she tried to leave.

She survived and was able to get help after Cash fled the crime scene in Mauldin’s car, according to the solicitor’s office.

She named Drew Cash and Steven Lewis as the perpetrators of the crimes, according to the report.

They say Cash and Lewis were arrested days after the shooting in Greensboro where they fled in Cash’s car after hiding a stolen car near Campobello on some land owned by Cash’s family.

Murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and first-degree burglary charges are still pending Lewis, according to the solicitor’s office.
