GAFFNEY, SC (WSPA) – A man died after a motorcycle crash in Gaffney on Friday.

The crash happened on Floyd Baker Blvd. at N. Logan St., according to the coroner.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler identified the motorcyclist as David S. Engwiller, 20.

Fowler said Engwiller was driving a 1994 Honda CBR 600 motorcycle east on West Floyd Baker Boulevard around 10:10 a.m.

According to the release, a South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper had initiated a traffic stop on Engwiller for not having a license plate, but Engwiller refused to stop and sped up.

The trooper did not chase Engwiller, but witnesses said that he continued a high rate of speed before he lost control of the motorcycle in the 300 block of West Floyd Baker Boulevard, and crashed into the back wall of a brick garage.

Fowler said Engwiller was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

According to Fowler, an autopsy will be performed to help with the fatal crash investigation.
