Man in custody after victim shot in back in Union Co.


UNION CO., SC (WSPA) – Deputies say a man was shot in the back and another is in custody after a weekslong argument in Union County, Wednesday.

According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened in the area of Lukesville Road around 11:15am.

A witness reported hearing gunshots and saw a man struggling to walk in a field, according to investigators.

Deputies say the man was taken to the hospital by a friend and told investigators that he was shot by Rayfus Cunningham.

The victim said he and Cunningham had been in an argument that had been brewing for the last few weeks. The victim told deputies that he felt threatened and started walking away before he was shot in the back.

68-year-old Rayfus Cunningham was arrested and admitted to investigators that he shot the victim.

Cunningham is charged with Attempted Murder, Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Violent Crime and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
