LAURENS COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Laurens County Sheriff’s Office officials said a man has been hospitalized for possible hypothermia after he reportedly tried to swim to a friend’s home, but ended up in a cover on Lake Greenwood on Tuesday morining.
According to Laurens County Capt. Chris Martin, they had an encounter with the man around midnight on Tuesday, after neighbors said he was wandering around.
Deputies responded to the area and took him back to his home.
Martin said around 4 a.m. the man called 911 to say he was lost.
Deputies said the man then decided to swim to a friend’s home, but couldn’t make it and ended up in the cove.
DNR spokesperson Capt. Robert McCullough said their crews were called in around 6 a.m. on Tuesday to assist Laurens County retrieve a man who was sitting on the cove’s bank.
McCullough said they picked up the Laurens County deputy in their boat, and then they rescued the man.
EMS crews took the man to an area hospital for treatment of possible hypothermia.
