Oconee Co. deputies investigating shooting death in Seneca

SENECA, SC (WSPA) - Oconee County Sheriff's Office deputies are investigating a shooting that killed one person Wednesday morning.

According to the release, deputies responded to a home on Lands End Road in regards to a shooting incident.

When they arrived, they found a man lying inside the home with a gunshot wound to the upper torso, and two people who were trying to help the man.

The man later died from a single gunshot to the upper body.

Coroner Karl Addis identified the man as Jason Edward Dalton, 43.

Addis said the shooting appears to be the result of the negligent handling of a firearm.

Dalton's death has been ruled a homicide, according to the coroner's office.

Deputies were told that the shot that hit the man came from another part of the home and was not in the room that the victim was in at the time.

According to the release, deputies were told that the person who fired the weapon was allegedly showing the weapon to someone else when the weapon went off.

That same person left the scene before deputies arrived.

The shooting has since been turned over to the Criminal Investigations Division and no charges or arrests have been made.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
