Man suffers heart attack, thanks coworkers for potentially saving life

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, someone in the United States has a heart attack every 43 seconds.

An Upstate man knows that reality all too well.

Randy Harriger suffered a heart attack, on the job, two weeks ago.

He works for Greenville Health System in the material logistics department.  On the day of his attack, his job required heavy lifting at a local office.

“I was lifting some of the printers and it hit me,” said Harriger.

Harriger experienced discomfort in his chest but told his coworkers he was okay.

“He said, ‘Yeah, I’m having heartburn.’  I said, ‘I’m not so sure this is heartburn,’ coworker Dale Smith recalls.

Another coworker, Ayesha Ahmad, went to find help.

Surprisingly, there was a nurse just down the hall.  It was only her fourth day on the job and she was in the building by chance.

“I had my stethoscope so i grabbed it,” said RN Lucia Wilkes.

Harriger was still set on “toughing it out,” but his coworkers had other plans.

“The ladies weren’t going to take no for an answer,” he said.

It’s a good thing they didn’t.

At the hospital, doctors found one of his arteries was 99% blocked.

“Three other arteries were 70% [blocked],” Harriger added.

Two weeks later, he’s back to the job he loves.  He’s also taking the time to thank everyone who played a part in potentially saving his life.

“He cried, I cried, and we probably both cried again,” said Ahmad.

Harriger received a stent and says he’s well on his way to living a healthier lifestyle.

His heart attacked happened in February which marks national heart month.

Nurses and doctors want to remind you to know the signs of a heart attack.  They also encourage you to act quickly if you see someone else experiencing those symptoms.
