BUNCOMBE CO., NC (WSPA) – A North Carolina man who was caught on video punching a bicyclist in September of 2017 will spend at least three days in jail for the crime.

Claude Donald Watson was sentenced to 45 days suspended to three days in jail on condition of probation after he was recorded punching a cyclist in the face after getting out of his truck on September 27.

The assault happened on Sand Hill Road in Buncombe County.

Watson pleaded guilty to Simple Assault of the man, whose injuries were minor.

The assault was caught on camera by a commercial vehicle and shared with Asheville on Bikes.

“The District Attorney’s Office recognizes that under NC law bicycles are considered vehicles and cyclists have the legal right to travel on our roads without fear of assault and unprovoked violence as the evidence clearly showed in this case,” said Buncombe County District Attorney Todd Williams.

If Watson fails to comply with his probation, the remainder of his sentenced would be activated.
