More than 100K Navy sailors’ personal info compromised


WASHINGTON (WCBD) β€” Sensitive personal info of thousands current and former Sailors compromised in a security breach, according to the Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs.

On October 27, the Navy was notified by Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services that one of the company’s laptops operated by their employee supporting a Navy contract was reported as being compromised, according to a news release.

On November 22, an investigation revealed sensitive information, including the names and Social Security Numbers of 134,386 current and former Sailors were accessed by unknown people.

β€œThe Navy takes this incident extremely seriously- this is a matter of trust for our Sailors,” said Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. Robert Burke. β€œWe are in the early stages of investigating and are working quickly to identify and take care of those affected by this breach.”

The Navy will notify affected Sailors in the coming weeks.The Navy is working to provide further details on what happened and what credit monitoring service options will be available for affected Sailors.

At this time, there is no evidence to suggest misuse of the information that was compromised, the news release added.
