LAURENS CO., SC (WSPA) – Deputies in Laurens County have arrested a woman after her two-year-old son was found half a mile away after going missing from home.
25-year-old Victoria Calhoun was arrested and charged with Unlawful Conduct Toward a Child.
Deputies say they received a 911 call Friday for a report of a two-year-old who had walked away from his home on Jim’s Town Road with two dogs around a half-hour before the call.
The Sheriff’s Office found the child around an hour after the search began along a driveway off of Apple Orchard Road, still with the two dogs.
Investigators say they made an inspection of the home and found animal feces in the child’s room as well as exposed wiring and other safety hazards.
Investigators also say that Calhoun was asleep at the time the child went missing and the house was not secure.
The child was taken into emergency protective custody by the Department of Social Services.
“It’s a miracle that this child was found without serious injury or worse. There was a creek in close proximity of the residence along with ponds in the area,” says Laurens County Sheriff Don Reynolds. “We all thank God this child was found in good health because this could have easily turned out much more tragic.”
“This child didn’t ask to be put in this situation and shouldn’t have had to live under such horrendous conditions,” says Reynolds.
