SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – First graders at one Upstate elementary school now have a better chance at avoiding the “summer slide.”
The non-profit South Carolina Future Minds partnered with Mary H. Wright Elementary School in Spartanburg for its My First Library program.
Each of the 85 kids got to choose five books to keep.
Educators say encouraging reading is especially important during the Summer months.
“Many children experience the summer slide, which is literacy and learning loss,” said Kathryn Harvey with Neue South Collective. “So sending these children home before the summer with the foundation of their first library really starts preventive measures and combating summer slide.”
This is the fourth year of the My First Library program.
