New boxing gym in Oconee Co. helping people with Parkinson’s Disease

WEST UNION, SC (WSPA)  – A new gym in Oconee County is officially open inside Total Fitness, and it’s helping people who are battling Parkinson’s Disease.

The Rock Steady Golden Corner Gym is a place for people to work through different exercises to help their parkinson’s symptoms surrounded by other people battling the same disease.

“It’s been show that exercise decreases symptoms or can halt them altogether,” said Joyce Bussell who was diagnosed five years ago.

The classes began at the end of February and already some of the fighters are seeing progress.

“Recently I went to visit my son and new grandbaby in January and I was having trouble holding the baby and getting out of the chair so they didn’t want me holding her and walking around. I just went back last week and I was able to hold her and just feel more confident in my walking,” said Claire Muzal who’s attending the classes.

There are over 800 Rock Steady boxing classes across the country after getting it’s start in Indiana in 2006.

The closest to this new gym is in Greenville, but the fighters tell 7News with their mobility issues many of them couldn’t make the drive that far for classes.
