North Carolina trooper kills man in floodwater confrontation

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory says a state trooper shot and killed a man during a confrontation amid the flooding that crippled the city of Lumberton in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.

McCrory said the trooper and two Robeson County sheriff’s deputies encountered the man while going through high water in a Humvee around 8 p.m. Monday.

The governor said at a Tuesday news conference that investigators are still trying to gather details about the shooting. He would only say it happened in “very difficult circumstances.”

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting. A woman answering the phone in the agency’s Fayetteville office said all the agents were out in the field helping with the investigation or flooding and there was no additional information to release.
