GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – A police officer from Connecticut died from injures he sustained after breaking up a fight at a bar early Sunday morning.

According to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office, the assault happened early Sunday morning at Uncle Tito’s on Highway 17 Business in Murrells Inlet. Deputies arrested Kelton Jess Todd in connection to the case. Todd is currently being charged with assault but authorities say charges may be updated after further investigation.

The sheriff’s office identified the victim as Matthew Mainieri. A statement from the police department in Connecticut Mainieri worked for says they were told he was trying to break up a fight.

The South Windsor Police Department also says Sergeant Mainieri was a 20- year veteran of the department and served in the traffic division and the detective division.

“Sgt. Mainieri spent his off-duty time with friends riding motorcycles, traveling to Vermont and South Carolina.  He leaves behind his mother, sister, girlfriend and countless friends. We send our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends as well as his police family throughout Connecticut and beyond,” a statement from the department stated.
