GREENVILLE (WSPA) – Work on a roughly one-mile long sewer tunnel – that will be built 100 feet below ground in downtown Greenville – is scheduled to launch in 2017.
The project – called Dig Greenville – will be a wastewater conveyance project that will stretch from Hudson Street to Cleveland Park. The project is projected to cost at least $46 million.
ReWa says the current system – which affects downtown Greenville to Travelers Rest – is nearing capacity. The design for the new tunnel is scheduled to be ready in May. Construction could start in late 2017 or early 2018.
A gravity sewer tunnel conveys wastewater without the use of mechanical equipment according to ReWa project manager Jason Gillespie.
The construction areas will be a staging area near the current City of Greenville Public Works facility and another near Cleveland Park and the Greenville Zoo.
Construction would taken about two and a half years.
There will be a public meeting on the project Thursday from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Kroc Center in Greenville. It will be the first of several planned public meetings.
