ATLANTA (WJBF/CBS46) – A portion of Interstate 85 northbound in Atlanta has collapsed due to a massive fire burning under the overpass. The collapsed portion is near the Piedmont Road area close to the exit to Georgia 400.
Traffic is blocked on both sides of the interstate as investigators inspect the southbound side to see if it is structurally sound to support traffic. As of 8pm law enforcement was turning motorists around on both sides of the interstate and sending them the opposite direction toward alternate routes.
Local reports say no firefighters or civilians were injured during the collapse.
Traffic has been stopped for more than an hour and motorists were seen getting out of their cars to wait.
According to CBS46, Atlanta Police said the fire was caused by piles of electrical wiring that is burning under the I-85 overpass.
