MACON COUNTY, NC (WSPA) – Troopers say a passenger in a transport van that a deputy was driving has died from injuries following a crash in Macon County.

The N.C. Highway Patrol identified the passenger as James Baggott, 66, of Franklin, N.C. Troopers say Baggott died of his injuries overnight.

The Macon County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy was also injured in the single-vehicle crash on Tuesday afternoon.

Macon County Sheriff Robert Holland said the deputy was transporting a patient to his home.

Holland said it appears the deputy’s vehicle hydroplaned during heavy rainfall on Highway 64 near Bill Dalrymple Road in Macon County.

The deputy was injured and taken to Angel Medical Center in Franklin for treatment.

Troopers identified the deputy as Cody Nathan Mitchell, 28.

Mitchell was transporting a patient in a transport van when the van went off the right side of the road, overturned multiple times and landed right side up, according to N.C. Highway Patrol.

The crash remains under investigation.
