PICKENS CO., S.C. (WSPA) – A judge denied bond Sunday for a man accused of shooting and killing his neighbor in his driveway in Pickens County, Saturday evening.
According to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Sunny Lane near Pickens for a report of a shooting shortly before 8:00 p.m.
Deputies say they found 39-year-old Robin Smith dead from apparent gunshot wounds in the driveway.
Investigators say .9mm shell casings and a .9mm handgun were found at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office arrested 58-year-old Paul Scott Bennett and charged him with Murder and Possession of a Weapon During a Violent Crime.
Bennett lived at the home where the shooting happened, according to deputies. Officials say Smith lived at the house next door.
Neighbors say Bennett and Smith were arguing before the shooting happened.
The Sheriff’s Office says Bennett called law enforcement around 4:30pm and said he had been shot at by trespassers on his property. They say he later recanted his story and said nobody had been on his property and that he had heard gunshots in the distance.
However, neighbors tell 7News that they have had to call deputies because of Bennett’s behavior before this past weekend.
They say he put up no trespassing signs around his home and threatened anyone who came near.
Smith’s family has created a GoFundMe account to help with funeral expenses and the care of her two sons. You can donate here.
