More than 300 Pickens County employees spent Friday morning on the side of the road picking up trash.
It’s all part of the county’s 150th anniversary celebrations. County Council Chairman Roy Costner tells 7News if you want to invite people to your community to celebrate it needs to be clean and welcoming. So for the first time, the county shut down nonessential offices to get everyone involved.
In just four hours, those employees and volunteers collected 22,280 pounds of trash and the county doesn’t want it to stop.
“We are asking everyone in the county to do five on Friday. If everyone in the county picks up five pieces of trash every Friday then we’d have half of million pieces of trash picked up every Friday,” Costner said.
Costner hopes their success challenges other communities and counties across the state to get out and do the same so South Carolina can be the most beautiful state.
