Police find dementia patient who left Greenville assisted living center

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) — Police say a man with dementia who went missing from a Greenville assisted living facility has been found safe.

Roy Whelchel, 82, went missing around 7 a.m. Monday from Southern Oaks Personal Care Home, according to the Greenville Police Department.

The facility is located at 120 Roper Mountain Road Ext.

A spokesman for the police department announced at 10:35 a.m. that Whelchel had been found.

“Mr. Whelchel has been located safe and sound. He was found in an employee’s car at Southern Oaks Personal Care Home within the last 15 minutes,” Donnie Porter said in an email. 

Police say Whelchel suffers from dementia.
