Prison secure after inmates overpower officer at Lee Correctional

LEE COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – The South Carolina Department of Corrections said there was an incident in one housing unit at Lee Correctional Institution Friday night.

According to a SC Dept. Corrections Tweet, SCDC emergency teams and SLED were called to Lee Correctional around 7:30 p.m.

SC Dept. Corrections said around 6:50 p.m. inmates overpowered an officer and took control of one side of a dorm at the correctional facility.

The inmates held the officer for around an hour and 25 minutes.

The officer was later seen by medical staff at the institution and was released to go home.

SC Dept. of Corrections said no inmates were injured and the incident remains under investigation. 

They said there was no damage to the dorm, and said there was no threat to public safety.

The dorm and the prison have since been secured, according to Tweets on the Department of Corrections Twitter page.
