Rabid cat potentially exposes 2 people to rabies in Oconee Co.

OCONEE Co., SC (WSPA) – Two people have been potentially exposed to rabies by a cat, according to SC Dept. of Enviornmental Control (DHEC).

The victims were bitten and scratched after taking in the stray on Jan. 12.

The small, gray tabby was initially found southeast of Seneca.

The cat was submitted for testing on Jan. 14 and was confirmed to have rabies on Jan. 15.

DHEC says the cat is the first animal in Oconee Co. to test positive for rabies in 2019.

There have been six confirmed cases of animal rabies statewide this year.
