A shelter for evacuees is now open in Polk County.
The Red Cross converted Polk County Middle School into a shelter for people who have chosen to voluntarily evacuate ahead of the severe weather that’s headed this way.
The county requested assistance from the Red Cross following the deadly landslides and flooding last weekend.
“Our role is really to be here to support their efforts,” said Executive Director Allie Trask. “To support the community and to make sure we are offering a safe haven and any supplies and resources that they need and members of the community need.”
The Red Cross is working with community partners to ensure evacuees with pets can safely shelter their animals during their start.
Trask tells 7News the shelter will remain open as long as needed.
