COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – A group of religious leaders from several different denominations are meeting at the South Carolina Statehouse to celebrate the grace shown by the families of the nine people killed during Bible study at a historic black church in Charleston.
The group will meet in the first-floor lobby of the Statehouse at 9 a.m. Monday. They will pass out stickers with the words “Amazing Grace!” and nine doves rising from a Palmetto tree as lawmakers return to debate whether to remove the Confederate flag from the capitol grounds.
The religious leaders are honoring the nine people at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church killed June 17 by a gunman police say was motivated by racial hatred.
The group includes AME members, along with Baptists, Methodists, Catholics, Presbyterians, Lutherans and other denominations.
