“Safety Camp” teaches kids first responder skills

First responders taught kids a number of safety tips during a day camp in McDowell County on Wednesday.

Emergency Services puts on the annual “Safety Camp” for students to learn basic first aid skills. More than 100 kids learned everything from drug prevention, to anti-bullying and even disaster preparedness from local agencies.

“It’s important for children to learn early how to prevent accidents,” Admin. Sgt. of McDowell County EMS Johnsie Parker told 7News. “We would rather prevent the accident than respond to it, as an EMS Services [employee.] So we work very hard to [teach] injury prevention.”

The camp is held annually.
