CHEROKEE CO., SC (WSPA) – A suspect is in custody after a trooper was stabbed following a chase while attempting to make an arrest in Cherokee County.

According to the S.C. Highway Patrol, troopers tried to stop a driver who was driving recklessly on Interstate 85 shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday.

When the vehicle did not stop, troopers began a chase. During the chase, the suspect’s vehicle swerved into one trooper’s vehicle before stopping and backing into another trooper’s vehicle on SC-329.

The suspect then ran from his vehicle before struggling with two troopers as they tried to arrest him. During the struggle, the suspect stabbed Lance Cpl. P.M. Wilkins in the shoulder.

Wilkins was taken to Mary Black Hospital in Gaffney with non life-threatening injuries and was later released from the hospital.

Moreno has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, resisting arrest with a deadly weapon and attempted escape, according to jail records.

Moreno is in the Cherokee County Detention Center.

A judge denied bond on Wednesday morning.

His next court date is scheduled Dec. 1.
