HAYWOOD Co., SC (WSPA) – Haywood Co. Sheriff’s Office says they have received several calls people regarding a phone scam where the callers are pretending to be members of the sheriff’s office.

They say scammers are pretending to be “Sheriff Christopher” “Major Smiley” and “Captain Moody.”

The officers do work with the sheriff’s office, but they are not calling people to tell them there are federal warrants for their arrest – and that they must pay with a prepaid money card.

Scammers also tell people they missed jury duty and they must pay.

The sheriff’s office urges you to not fall for it and to hang up the phone.
