Simpsonville PD offers home & business check-in's while owners travel

SIMPSONVILLE, SC -  There's no place she won't go.

On occasion, Barbara Whitman travels months at a time in her RV exploring the country.

"We go anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months,” she told 7 News at her home on Tuesday.

That's why three years ago, she said she decided it was better safe than sorry.

The Simpsonville resident registered her home with the Police Department, letting them know when she'd be out of the area and for how long.

"Family can’t come and stay, neighbors watch the house but it’s better if you have a police presence come and watch your property."

Barbara and her husband are now registered under the Simpsonville Police Department "Vacation Watch Program."

Homeowners like the Whitman’s and business owners that sign up have access to a police officer every 12 hours checking their property to make sure no one breaks in while they're away.

"It's checking on windows, checking on doors, checking on garage doors,” explained Officer Brandon David. “And we'll check the perimeter of the house, checking even the back in the house, including outbuildings."

According to Officer Davis, the extra precaution could save people thousands of dollars if big ticket items are stolen.

While the program isn't new, the department says they've seen an increase of people using it this summer.

Lately, they’ve been watching an average of 10 homes per week.

With Labor Day weekend just days away, they're encouraging people to take advantage of it.

"We're just trying to bring light to it to kind of give our citizens a peace of mind and bring community back to the Police Department."
