Social media listening center tracking conversations about Florence for SCEMD

CLEMSON, SC (WSPA) – While we are tracking Tropical Storm Florence, students and professors are tracking the conversations about it on social media.

Inside Clemson University’s Social Media Listening Center people are hard at working helping the S.C. Emergency Management Department manage and track social media. From Facebook to Instagram, they are discovering virtual groups and providing vital information and reaching nearly two million people.

“They give manpower where we may not have that for a number of reasons. Public information is just a big challenge to listen and hear rumors to make sure people are going to authorized sources for information,” said Stephen Combs who is the PIO for Anderson County Emergency Management.

Combined this group has already put in nearly 200 hours monitoring social media and they tell 7News the highest points of conversation happened on Tuesday and Thursday ahead of the storm.
