Spartanburg chefs using flavored salts, sugars, spices and more from new shop

News

Adding to the diversity of Main Street, the Spice and Tea Exchange recently opened a new location in Spartanburg with unique spices, teas and flavored salts and sugars.

The store is already influencing the way some Spartanburg restaurants are preparing their dishes. Owner Marc Desmarais says that includes a local donut shop owner who discovered blueberry sugar.

“I opened a jar and she smelled it and had the biggest smile on her face because this aroma was so appealing to her that she decided to make blueberry donuts and blueberry pop-tarts,” Desmarais says.

Other local restaurants are using some of the spices as meat rubs, he says.

Starting in October, several Spartanburg chefs will team up with the new store to offer cooking classes. Different themes range from appetizers to international foods to desserts.

The Spice and Tea Exchange is located at 135 West Main Street in Spartanburg.

The store is celebrating its grand opening next Thursday, September 27th. To sign up for cooking classes, call 864-707-5488 or email Spartanburg@spiceandtea.com.
