SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) — A long-time coach and teacher is off the job following a DUI arrest.

Spartanburg police arrested Fred Burnett Jr., 64, of Fairforest on Thursday night following a crash at Outback Steakhouse on John B. White Sr. Boulevard.

A police report says Burnett’s speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet.

Burnett said he had two to three drinks, according to police.

He was arrested for DUI after failing to complete a field sobriety test.

Burnett reportedly gave a breath sample of .11 at the jail.

Burnett was issued a citation for DUI and booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center.

Jail records show he was released Friday morning.

A spokesperson for Spartanburg County School District 3 confirmed Burnett has been a coach and teacher for more than 40 years at the Middle School of Pacolet.

Burnett has been placed on administrative leave.
