The Spartanburg County Area Performance Planning kick off meeting was held today at Pelham Medical Center in Greer. The Advisory Committee and the Technical Advisory Committee had a combined meeting to discuss their roles in the future of planning for Spartanburg County.
Director of Spartanburg County Planning Bob Harkrader told attendees the group is dedicated to make the county a preferred destination for families and businesses to live, play and invest. He said the county needs a balance to provide resident with a good quality of life and make room for positive growth and development opportunities.
To do this, Harkrader said, he understands property owners will want their land protected and he encouraged the group to work around road classifications as they stand now when considering areas to develop. That could mean making sure significant development is appropriate at arterial roads which might be larger and busier, collector roads near subdivisions and and local roads with the lowest speed limits.
Leaders also said they are not planning to rezone areas in Spartanburg County but build where new structures would be compatible.
Harkrader said planning will start in the Southweastern area of the county. He said there will be plenty of public involvement through community workshops, a website and adoption meetings.
