Spartanburg singer credits little cousin with success

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) — Aja Miller was among the winners in a Spartanburg music awards show that recently recognized top artists in South Carolina.

The up and coming R&B singer says she owes her success to her little cousin.

It’s a big day for 8-year-old Myleigh McDowell, watching her role model Aja Miller chase her dream in a recording studio.

“I’m proud of her that she’s growing up to be a famous singer,” Myleigh said.

Despite low chances of surviving, Myleigh is now cancer free and can see it for herself.

The cousins consider each other sisters.

β€œShe is my shero and actually the year that I started was the year we found out she had cancer,” Aja said of Myleigh.

Aja said Myleigh’s determination motivated her to pursue a career in singing that’s starting to take off.

“If she can overcome cancer i can wake up every morning and put my full being into my dream,” Aja said.

In a year, the 23-year-old has been recruited to perform in los angeles, released several music videos and won the Jetlag TV Awards in Spartanburg for best female R&B singer earlier this month.

“My ultimate goal is to do tributes for Beyonce and Fantasia,” Aja said.

The competition was fan based, so Aja says she’s hopeful that momentum will come in handy when she releases her upcoming EP playlist.

Her number one fan won’t be far away.
