SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – The staffer who wrote Melania Trump’s speech is explaining what happened in a release from the Trump campaign.

Meredith McIver says she is an in-house staff writer at the Trump Organization and a longtime friend of the family.

She says she was working with Melania on her speech and they were talking about the people who inspired her and messages she wanted to share.

She says Michelle Obama is someone Melania always liked and Melania read passages from Mrs. Obama’s speech as examples.

McIver says she wrote them down and included some of the phrasing in the draft that became the final speech.

She says she did not check Obama’s speeches.

“This was my mistake, and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant,” said McIver.

She says she offered her resignation to Mr. Trump and the family, but they rejected it.

Trump told her that people make innocent mistakes.

McIver says she asked that her statement be released because she didn’t like the way it was distracting from Trump’s campaign and Melania’s message and presentation.

She apologized for the confusion and hysteria her mistake caused.
