COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Republican Gov. Henry McMaster is praising South Carolina’s efforts to fight COVID-19 and defending his decisions to shut down the fewest possible activities and businesses during the pandemic.
He also announced his newest governing priorities in his annual State of the State address on Wednesday evening.
The governor said the pandemic slowed South Carolina down, but not by much in 2020.
The outbreak is still raging and South Carolina’s death toll has topped 5,400 people.
State Sen. Mia McLeod said in the Democratic response that McMaster was too concerned with saving business profits and allowed a second wave of COVID-19 to bring misery and death to the state.
