State tax refund checks could be delayed

It’s a general rule that the earlier you file your taxes, the quicker you get your return. But this year, you could be waiting a little longer for that check or direct deposit from the state.

“This is money that is stolen from our government and our taxpayers so we have to address it” says Ashley Thomas, spokeswoman for the South Carolina Department of Revenue.

Thomas says there has been a spike in fake tax filings and it’s costing the federal government anywhere between $6 to $30 billion. Now state tax refunds are at risk

“They’re now moving toward stealing in addition your state refunds,” Thomas warns.

South Carolina is the latest state to put measures in place to stop that from happening which is why state returns could be delayed by about two to three weeks. Thomas won’t go into detail on specifically what is being done to stop the fraud but did say SCDOR will be using multiple levels of verification and analytic technology.

If you believe you were a victim of a fraudulently filed return, complete and submit the IRS Identity Theft Affidavit Form 14039 and call the SCDOR’s dedicated customer care line at 1-803-898-7638.
