Storm brings down church steeple in Spartanburg Co.

SPARTANBURG Co., S.C.  (WSPA) — Worshipers were gathered for a prayer service when strong winds ripped off part of a Woodruff church.

The steeple at Green Pond Baptist Church toppled Wednesday night as strong storms moved through the area.

Part of the steeple fell on cars in the parking lot.

Pastor Ricky Vines said the steeple has been in place since the 1950s.

Green Pond Baptist Church formed in 1804. The current sanctuary opened in January 1957, according to the church’s website.

Some church members say they did not hear the steeple fall because of the storms. They discovered the damage and a few cars after leaving the prayer service.

Pastor Vines is thankful that no one was hurt.

“This is a small thing when placed in the perspective of life…just a bump in the road and we move forward, and our people’s spirits are not dampened at all,” he said.
