GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC (WSPA) Greenville County Schools officials said an eighth grade student was arrested after he had an unloaded gun and a knife inside of a backpack on Wednesday.

According to school spokesperson Beth Brotherton, the Bryson Middle School student had the gun and the knife in a string backpack and put it in an outdoor trash can.

Brotherton said other students found the bag and threw it on the roof as a safety precaution. They then notified school administration and the school was placed on lockdown.

According to the release, the school resource officer secured the weapons and took the student into custody.

That student was arrested for possessing weapons on campus.

At this point in the investigation it does not appear that the student made any threats, Brotherton said. The student who brought the weapons will be suspended and recommended for expulsion. Federal law requires a mandatory 12-month expulsion any time a firearm is brought on school property. We commend the students who witnessed a suspicious act and quickly informed an adult.

The Simpsonville Police Department is in charge of the investigation.
