ALEXANDRIA, VA (AP / CBS)- The suspected gunman is dead and Rep. Steve Scalise is in critical condition after gunfire at a congressional baseball game practice in Alexandria, VA.
It happened early Wednesday morning. A group of Republicans were practicing ahead of an annual baseball game held between Democrats and Republicans.
Five people, including a congressman, were shot and taken to the hospital.
CBS News reports the suspect has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Illinois.
CBS News say the weapons used were a handgun and an M4 Assault Rifle.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise is in critical condition following surgery for a gunshot wound to the hip.
Matt Mika was shot in the chest. Mika is the Director of Government Relation with Tyson Foods.
Zack Barth, a staffer with Rep. Roger Williams, was also shot along with one Capitol Police Officer.
A second Capitol Police Officer and another congressman were hurt in the shooting but were not shot.
Representative Jeff Duncan spoke with 7News Daybreak and said he left the practice for a meeting, and believes he may have spoken to the shooter.
Duncan said a gentleman asked him if it was the Republican or Democrat team practicing. Duncan said he responded that it was Republicans.
Duncan said it’s not uncommon for members of the public to visit or ask that question.
Later Wednesday morning, Duncan noticed heightened security on Capitol Hill and later learned that one of his colleagues had been shot on the field he had just left.
“God is so good to get me out of there when he did. I just praise him,” Duncan said.
He said today was the last day of practice before the baseball game, which is an annual event for charity.
