Suspect in 2018 Cherokee Co. murder arrested in NC, deputies say

CHEROKEE CO., SC (WSPA) – The man wanted in connection with the shooting death of a man in Cherokee County in 2018 has been captured in Gaston County, North Carolina, according to the sheriff’s office.

Salvador Marquez was taken into custody around 5:40pm Friday in Gastonia.

Marquez was wanted for the murder of 33-year-old Matthew Markess Littlejohn on January 23, 2019, according to deputies.

Littlejohn was shot and killed on SC-329 at Commerce Drive, just north of Gaffney.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, a victim said they were followed from a gas station on Shelby Highway by the suspect who opened fire on their vehicle. Littlejohn died at the scene.

Marquez has been wanted since he was identified as a suspect through surveillance footage just days after the shooting, according to the sheriff’s office.

Marquez was expected to have an extradition hearing Monday in Gaston County.

On Tuesday, Marquez was booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center, where he is awaiting a bond hearing.
