Suspect who turned gun on self after standoff in Polk Co. ID’d


COLUMBUS, N.C. (WSPA) – A suspect who fatally shot himself Sunday following a standoff with deputies in Polk County was identified Monday.

According to a Polk County Sheriff’s Office news release, Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to Big Level Road and arrested Camden Owen McWhirter, 33, of Cleveland County, for suspicion of driving while impaired.

Deputies then took McWhirter to the Polk County Detention Center and upon entering the secured lot, McWhirter revealed he had a weapon.

North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation agents, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Columbus Police Department, Tryon Police Department and the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene to assist Polk County.

Officials tried to negotiate with McWhirter during the standoff and asked him several times to give them the weapon.

The standoff ended when the suspect suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and took his own life.

The NCSBI is investigating the incident and no other information is being released at this time.
