OCONEE CO., SC (WSPA) – One man has died after he was struck by a train while sitting along the tracks in Oconee County, Friday afternoon.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office said they were called to the scene for a report of a person struck by a train along Highway 123 near Pendleton Road. Deputies said it was across from Hartwell Village shopping center.

The man was working his first day on the job at the construction site for a new apartment complex as a crossing attendant for the railroad crossing, the coroner said.

The victim was thrown 45 feet by the impact, according to the coroner.

The Oconee County Coroner’s Office will continue to investigate along with Norfolk Southern and the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.
