A warning for drivers in the Upstate: The Greenville/Anderson/Mauldin area has the highest car thefts rate in the Carolinas.
In Anderson County alone there have already been over 60 attempted or completed auto thefts this year. Last year there were just under 600 total, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, we ranked 41 out of 380 metropolitan areas Nationwide in 2014.
Investigators say one of the most common reasons for criminals to steal cars is to commit other crimes, like drug deals. They usually toss the car when they don’t need it anymore.
They can also use them to make easy cash. When the keys are left in a vehicle, it makes them easy to steal and easy to sell. They can also sell stolen cars for parts.
