Thousands without power in NC, schools cancel classes

Hendersonville, N.C. (WSPA) — Thousands of customers are without power across western North Carolina and schools have cancelled classes.

School has been cancelled for Edneyville and Dana elementaries for Tuesday, Jan. 24, due to power outages at the schools and in surrounding areas. According to Duke Energy, power won’t be restored until the afternoon. Day classes were canceled Tuesday at Fruitland Baptist Bible College due to the power outage.

Duke Energy reports that about 6,000 customers are without power as of 8:15 a.m. Most of the customers are in Henderson County. Hundreds more are without power in McDowell, Rutherford and Polk counties.

A spokesman with the utility company said crews are on the ground investigating an equipment issue that caused the outage.
