Three Upstate businesses charged in Medicare fraud scheme

U.S. attorneys said three companies in the Upstate are part of one of the largest Medicare fraud schemes in the FBI’s history.

The investigation, called “Operation Brace Yourself,” centered around durable medical equipment, such as back braces, knee braces, and neck braces, that were billed to Medicare. Authorities said Medicare was billed for Chinese-made braces, which may not have been medically necessary for patients.

Charges have been brought against a Mt. Pleasant man and 14 companies in which he had ownership interest, including three in the Upstate.

It appears one of the companies is still in business in Taylors, S.C. The other two companies, located in Greer, S.C., do not appear to be operating anymore.

In a quiet office park in Greer, suite 3B stands empty. According to a National Provider Identifier database, it should be the site of D2 Medical, a company owned by Andrew Chmiel, who was recently accused of cheating taxpayers out of more than $200 million.

“You wouldn’t have guessed that something fishy was going on, ” said Thomas Nyblon, who works across the street from the suite listed as the address for D2 Medical.

People who work nearby told 7News they didn’t recall a business by the name of D2 Medical being in that suite. According to employees who work in the complex, the suite was occupied by an aviation parts company until recently.

In Taylors, In-Home Senior Care is another durable medical equipment, or “DME,” company charged in the fraud scheme. No one answered the door Tuesday during business hours when 7News stopped by.

A worker at a nearby company said they saw just one employee coming and going from the business.

According to U.S. Attorneys, this is one of the companies that charged medicare for equipment that patients may not have not have needed.

7News was unable to reach the reigstered agents of In-Home Senior Care and Wren Senior Care.
